Today’s Promise is 1 John 5:3 CJB:
“For loving God means obeying his commands. Moreover, his commands are not burdensome.”
Devotion:
As a child, I was convinced I was going to hell. God’s commandments were very burdensome indeed, being held over my head as a means of making me behave. A means that failed miserably. No matter how hard I tried, I could not be “good.” By the time I became a teenager I had given up trying altogether.
The good news is, God is not like earthly parents–or anyone on earth for that matter. He drew me back to Him with love and showed me that it isn’t my goodness that makes me worthy of His love, but rather His love and goodness that enables me to keep His commandments. Seek God’s heart above all else, and trust His love to transform you. Then keeping His commandments will be a joyful expression of God’s love, and no burden at all.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, Your all powerful love has saved me. Thank You for not giving up on me. Thank You for giving me the love, joy, and peace I could never find on my own. Stay with me and in me forever, Lord, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
