Today’s Promise is John 5:39 NIV:
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me.”
Devotion:
Studying and memorizing scripture is vital for spiritual growth, but we mustn’t fall into the same trap as the Jewish leaders of old. They were so focused on the letter of the Law, on following the rules and making up new ones to make it even more difficult for God’s people to stay on His good side. So focused, they missed the embodiment of that very Law when He stood right in front of them. How did they miss Him? Because Jesus didn’t “fit” the profile they had developed of a savior by studying the Law so diligently. Terrible things can and have happened in the church when people lean on their own understanding and reject God’s Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth. The Word tells us about our Lord and Savior, but it is His Spirit, alive in us, who reveals the Truth in the Word and makes us know Him. And knowing Him is what makes Him our Savior.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your Word, leading me to the Cross of Your Son, my Savior. Fill me with Your Spirit also, in Jesus’ name, that I may truly know You and knowing You, walk in Your Truth all the days of my life. Amen.
