Promise of the Day: No Rest for the Apathetic

Blessings!

Today’s Promise is Hebrews 4:9, 10 NKJV:

There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.”

Devotion:

The author of Hebrews tells us in Chapter 4 that the rest God offers us today is the same rest He offered Israel through the giving of the Torah through Moses. The rest of ceasing from our own wants and desires and coming into obedience to God’s will. The Israelites received the Word of God, but did not enter in to God’s rest, “because of unbelief.” “Unbelief” here being apeitheia or disobedience.* If this word sounds familiar to you it’s because it’s where we get our word apathy. Did it ever occur to you that apathy is a form of disobedience? Unfortunately, the Israelite’s refusal to enter into God’s rest, their apathy, also cost them citizenship in the Promised Land.

Jesus demonstrated entering God’s rest in His life on earth and death on the Cross. Complete submission. In His resurrection from the dead, He demonstrated the power He gives to those who not only hear His Word, but obey as well. The power to enter into His rest for all eternity.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your rest. Your Word is life and obedience is the way to Your rest. Help me by the power of Your Holy Spirit to be a doer of Your Word and not just a hearer, in Jesus’ name, that I may enter into Your rest. Amen.

Have a victorious day in the Lord!

Rebecca
